Stage Design: Rashomon

Task: Design a stage for Rashomon production.

Looking closer at Japanese Culture. Researching traditional clothing, architecture, artists (style of their work).
Finding key elements that define Japanese style and create the right feel.

Researching the nature. In my opinion, it is important to base my ideas of stage design inspiring from their nature.
The hight of never-ending length of bamboo trees,  small forest streams and fresh colours.

Stage Design inspiration. As I wanted my stage to to be simple with modern features, I looked at different ways of lighting the stage and also high fashion elements. Catwalk elements are usually simple and a few but enough to provide a certain feeling that is important in theatre sets.

Stage Mood. Creating a Concept. The feeling of each scene is thought to be achieved by use of projection, contrasting clothing and lighting.

Stage planning. As a result of my many sketches I came up with the final concept.
The middle of the stage is thought to be the main acting area. The inspiration for this red platform and shape comes from Japanese flag.
Also the centre of the stage (the red platform) would be set to have lighting underneath. It would be built to spin around, that way allowing
the actors to change from scene to scene easily.
The front of the stage would have water containing element that would be used as a small stream throughout the play.
Not only that, but it would allow to recreate the rain effect for the beginning of the production.

This stage model shows the main parts and elements of the final stage design.
The two top picture show the movement of the platform within the play.

Researching the Japanese fashion. I paid a lot of attention to their traditional clothing and hair accessories in different periods
combining the ideas with the latest high fashion examples.

Costume design suggestions. Traditional elements made in more geometrical way.

Playing around the scenes (Gates, Forest, Court).
Gate scene: This scene is planned to have cold lighting dominating and a hint of warm light coming from the side of the stage representing the fireplace.
It also would have wooden plank features (ruins).
Forest scene: The feeling of the forest would be projected by adding some green lights.
Court scene: the idea is to light the central platform element, that way bringing all of the attention to the middle of the stage.
This scene is planned to have changing colours when the Medium is calling the Spirit to the court room.
